Joining the St Brendan's Community
Choosing the right school for your child is a journey of finding a community where they can truly belong. At St Brendan's Moorooka, we combine a high-achieving academic environment with a diverse, welcoming atmosphere. Below are the answers to the most common questions parents ask when considering our school.
About Our School & Values
What makes St Brendan's different from other schools in Moorooka? We are a boutique primary school where every child is known by name. While we offer the resources and technology of the Brisbane Catholic Education network, we maintain a small-school atmosphere that prioritises community. Our unique
Community Hub sets us apart, providing a space for families to connect through playgroups and adult classes.
Do you have to be Catholic to attend St Brendan's?No. We are a multicultural community that welcomes families from all faiths—and those of no faith—who share our values of respect, justice and kindness. Currently, our student body represents over 12 different nationalities.
Learning & Academics
How does the school track my child's progress? We believe that reporting should be a continuous conversation between the school and home. We use a four-pillar approach to ensure you always know how your child is performing:
- Interviews: We hold formal Parent-Teacher interviews twice a year. These are collaborative "Learning Conversations" where we discuss your child's data, social-emotional growth and specific goals for the coming term.
- Twice-yearly Written Reports: At the end of Semester 1 and Semester 2, you will receive a comprehensive written report card. This provides a formal summary of achievement and effort across all learning areas of the Australian Curriculum.
- Portfolios: We maintain curated portfolios of student work. These collections provide a window into the classroom, showing the actual progress and sequence of your child's learning journey throughout the year.
- Celebrations of Learning: Throughout the year, we invite parents into the school for special events where students showcase their projects and achievements. This allows students to take pride in their work and develop confidence in presenting what they have learned.
Does the school have composite (multi-age) classes?Yes. Like many small schools, we use composite classes (e.g., Year 1/2 or 3/4). This model allows for differentiated learning, where students work at their own developmental level rather than just their age level. It also fosters a mentorship culture where older students lead and younger students feel supported.
What extracurricular activities are available? We offer a variety of clubs and sports to nurture every child's interests:
- Creative: Choir, Ukulele, and Recorder.
- Tech & Logic: Minecraft Club and LEGO Club.
- Active: Morning Running Club and inter-school sports competitions.

Starting Prep (The Transition Phase)
When should I enrol my child for Prep?Your child is eligible for Prep if they turn 5 years old by 30 June in the year they start Prep. We recommend applying early in the calendar year before your child is due to start, eg. apply in early 2026 for Prep 2027.
Early or delayed entry may be considered in special circumstances, following Queensland Department of Education guidelines. Use the
Prep Calculator to check your child's eligibility.
How does the school support Prep students starting for the first time?We offer a unique
Get Set for Prep program which allows incoming students to visit the classrooms, meet their teachers, and make friends before the school year begins, significantly reducing "first-day jitters."
Daily Life
What are the school hours and OSHC options? The school day begins at 8:30 am and concludes at 3:00 pm. For busy parents,
Catholic Early EdCare provide on-site Outside School Hours Care (OSHC):
- Before School: 6:30 am – 8:30 am
- After School: 3:00 pm – 6:00 pm
What is the St Brendan's Community Hub?The
Community Hub is a signature feature of our school that supports the whole family, not just the student. It provides:
- Free English language classes for parents.
- Playgroups for younger siblings.
- Vocational pathways and community networking. It is a space designed to help new families integrate into the Moorooka community quickly.
